via youtube.comAll I would like to add to this video is that though the video explains qawwali as devotional music arising from the Sufi Muslim tradition, it has in fact morphed over the years. In fact, some of the songs are not about religion at all, rather about lovers and their quarrels. Some of the artists mentioned in this video even mentioned alcohol and womanizing in their music. Qawwali started off as religious devotional music, which is primarily still is, but variations do exist and are widely listened to.
This post is the first in a series of music-related posts focusing specifically on the Art of the qawwali and the qawwals who practice it.
For all those awesome folk that replied to my post about Urdu/Pakistani music yesterday with excited encouragement and sometimes pleadings for music suggestions, please note that I am starting a series of music-related posts at Stories From Pakistan (SFP) which hopefully give you all some great ideas for Urdu music. I won’t be posting each video/song on this blog, so please do keep track over at SFP. Enjoy!
